Find Your Freedom: Cello Coffeehouse & Cafe

How Joe Migdadi of Cello Coffeehouse & Cafe in Downtown Roanoke Found his Freedom Banking With Freedom First

Joe Migdadi loves cooking. He breaks into a bright smile when he talks about how he’s been cooking most of his life - professionally so for over 20 years. When he and his family moved to Roanoke from Jordan, he seized the opportunity to open Cello Coffeehouse and Cafe in the Market Area downtown.

“I love downtown Roanoke,” Joe said. “I’d like to bring the culture of the Middle East - the food and drink - and share it with downtown Roanoke.”

Cello offers a wide variety of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. It’s the only place in Roanoke where you can choose from over 20 different kinds of baklava or enjoy a Nutella Turkish Latte. Even the unique gelatos are homemade, with only a few pre-prepared ingredients here and there.

So how does Cello benefit from banking with Freedom First?

The COVID-19 pandemic created difficulty for many local, small businesses - especially those in food service and brick-and-mortar retail. Freedom First worked with Joe to secure funding from the City of Roanoke that allowed him to not only stay in business, but expand it.

“Freedom First helped me upgrade my business. The employees are very nice and helpful, and everything was so smooth and easy. Basically, Freedom First made my life easy!”

Cello is one of Roanoke’s hidden gems, and Freedom First was excited to play a role in its success. Supporting the banking needs of locally-owned small businesses is crucial to keep our economy growing and community vibrant. And unlike many other financial institutions, Freedom First can help make sure that federal, state, and local capital is deployed to the very businesses (like Cello) that make our region so special.
